Success…sort of

I had class from 12-12.50 today and then again at 2 so I made my way to the gym after my first class with the intention of doing 2x20min however I soon came to realise that would not work too well if I wanted to be in class by 2. So, I just did the 1 20min piece. Hopefully I’ll make myself head down to the gym tomorrow and make up for it even though I have no class and therefore no real reason to make my way to campus.

soooooooo….

So I’ve been a little lax in posting on tumblr recently, which is crazy because I totally still find time to check it.

Things have been good this week. I’ve been going to the gym and doing some erg workouts for the first time since I finished my season in January. At this point I’m looking to gain fitness over the winter and if i’ve reached the point I want to by about September when the real rowing season starts I will row for the next season.

This season was my most successful in my 4/5 years rowing. I didn’t start training until about September or October and even then my doubles partner and I agreed that the season was just going to be a casual fun one. Next thing we know its December and we are on a training camp rowing three times a day. Then we won a medal in our biggest regatta of the season. After that the only thing I could think was: What if I had actually had decent preparation?

So, this winter is aimed at seeing what I can do, and seeing what I can motivate myself to do without having a coach hovering over my every training session (not that my coach is actually like that).

So far this week i’ve been doing ergs at U2 level, so just base fitness which I find quite hard. I always seem to go out too hard and I struggle to bring the splits down to what I want them at, this happens to me during my 2k ergs as well. U2 splits for me are generally between 2:15.0 and 2:20.0 so relatively slow but for an extended period of time (i’m starting at 30min and building up to 60min).

Monday -> 30min erg, 6605m, 2:16.2 average split/500m, stroke rate=21

Tuesday -> 2x20min,

                                1- 4479m, 2:13.9 average split/500m, stroke rate=21

                                2- 4354m, 2:17.8 average split/500m, stroke rate 22

Wednesday -> 30min erg, 6651m, 2:15.3 average split/500m, stroke rate=21

I’ve also been doing some weights. I was planning on doing upper body and lower body sessions but I’ve decided that at the moment I’ll just focus on the upper body for a bit. I know that I have strong legs, rowing will maintain that strength and I can build on that in a month or two. I have very little upper body strength thought so my focus is there at the moment.

Well here’s to hoping this motivation continues.  :D

University…

Sitting on my bed at the moment procrastinating. Should be heading to class but I have an essay on Hamlet sue in at 4pm and I still don’t really have much of an idea of what I’m going to say.

I had a chocolate bar for the first time in a couple of weeks today and I didn’t really enjoy it nor did I find it satisfying. I ate it and realised that I didn’t need it and I didn’t really want it either. This is pretty amazing for me considering I’m the person who in the past would have no problems with buying a block of chocolate, sitting in my room, an eating the entire thing.

Running…

So I didn’t actually make it out for a run until today. Yesterday I had classes and then work and really wasn’t in the mood to do anything. Today is ANZAC day so it’s a public holiday and there were no uni classes. Originally I was going to walk 20min down the hill to a trail to go running but I kind of couldn’t be bothered moving from the house. I did, however, suggest to my father that we go walk the dog at the beach after lunch. After lunch we drove to the beach, mum and dad walked the dog and I had an unbelievably good run. There’s something about running at the beach that just enables you to let go. It’s not the repetitive running around fields or particular loops around campus that allow me to get bored easily. However, running on the beach = running in barefeet = sore legs at the end of the run. I ended up running approx 3.23 miles in 31:29. I don’t know exactly because my running app kind of stuffed up after about a mile. I found out while running those 3 miles that I don’t really find running too hard. I think I could have gone on for quite a while longer. I assume that I’m fit enough to run quite a lot further but my legs may not like me for it. I’ve also made the realisation that it takes me a mile or two to actually get into a run. It wasn’t until about the 2 mile point that I was really comfortable with how I was running and how I was feeling. I think this may have something to do with the fact that I’m used to just sitting in a boat for a couple of hours rowing, one movement over and over again. Running is similar, one movement over and over again. Anyways, to any of you who read this, thanks. To any of you who follow me, your awesome :D Have a nice morning/day/night Lest We Forget

“IF YOU BACK OFF YOUR GOAL SPLIT IN THE SECOND 500m OF A 2K, JUST FOR A FEW STROKES, YOUR PIECE WILL CRASH AND BURN. Why? Simple: The difference in power output into the machine from a 1:40 to a 1:42 is mere percentages. The athlete will still hurt just as much producing the energy for a 1:42 as a 1:40. But the mental drain that comes from “stepping off” just a little opens the door to “stepping off” a lot. Suddenly, an athlete whose goal was 1:40 and was capable of holding that split is pulling 1:44 or 1:45, gasping for breath and wondering why they still hurt so much. The lesson, as always: RACES ARE WON IN THE MIDDLE.”

A good start???

I was planning on going for a run and then going to the gym after I finished classes at 12 today, but things did not go quite to plan. I got out of classes and it was pretty warm… more like way too hot for an autumn day and a run.

So I went to the gym, pumped out 30min on the crosstrainer and then did a core session before meeting my mother in town where she very graciously shouted me a coffee and bought me some groceries for making my lunches.

Was going to go for a run after dinner but I forgot how dark it gets now. It is most certainly no longer summer. I’ll just have to force myself to get up tomorrow morning and I’ll get a run in before I go to class. Missing this run shouldn’t matter too much anyway, I’m starting off easy this week with runs between 1.5 and 2 miles just so my legs can get used to it.

Hopefully I’ll pick it up after a bit though.

Night everyone, time for me to go to sleep/watch Hamlet…
